Young Bernanke

Economics students probably do it daily, according to UK site StudentBeans.com.

The site asked 4,656 sexually active students from more than 100 universities across the UK.

The result was that economics majors were found to have slept with an average of 4.88 partners since starting university.

Runners-up were social workers (4.7 partners), followed by marketing students (4.57 partners).

And who's getting shut down?

Environmental science majors came up last, having only bedded 1.71 partners — even lower than theology students' 2.13 partners.

German Insurance Giant Took Employees On Erotic Trips Around The World

Last summer a unit of Munich Re, the world's largest reinsurer, was busted for taking employees to a 2007 sex party in Budapest. Executives were fired for hosting this party, at which prostitutes wore colored bracelets to identify what favors they could perform.

Well, it turns out this was just the start.

The company released an internal audit this week of more than 500 incentive trips in the interest of transparency, according to the Telegraph.

Dr. Torsten Oletzky, CEO of Munich Re's primary insurance unit, ERGO, apologized for various behavior, including "incorrectly claiming that the incidents on the trip to Budapest 2007 had been an isolated incident."

The audit turned up 12 more erotic trips (roughly translated by Google, but you get the idea):

  • Sardinia 2012 - improper conduct affecting the traveler against a female companion and a waitress.
  • Kitzbühel 2010 and 2011 - there are taxi invoices showing that trip participants drove back from a table dance bar in the hotel. Evidence of the bar are not available.
  • Broker office attended a so-called "swingers hotel" in Jamaica (2009 and 2011).
  • Broker office also visited this hotel in Jamaica (2010).
  • Hamburg (2010) - A sales executive expected by self-evidence from four tickets and drinks with a total of 69.50 euros a striptease nightclub.
  • New York (2010) - In a competitive travel a group of students went to the official program, a club with striptease program, taking the part of the travel company were paid for drinks. The cost was about 900 euros.
  • Rio de Janeiro (2010) - The audit found evidence of drinks for about 300 euros a night club, which was the company charged.
  • Tallinn (2009) - There were 10 admission tickets together 100 Eurovon settled a striptease nightclub.
  • Vienna (2008) - Travel players expected receipts for drinks in the amount of about € 250 a night bar from.
  • Hamburg (2007) - A branch manager with seminar participants visited an erotic clubs on the Reeperbahn.

The audit also contains details from each trip. For instance in Sardinia a participant received this stern warning (again, translated by Google):

"(...) You have to behave a female operator of the premises over completely disrespectful. So you have several times put his arm around the operation, although clearly evident that your behavior was perceived as unpleasant and refused.  Particularly serious is that you have made up our colleague Mrs [A] on the buttocks! We can be left at this point explicitly, whether you have committed an offense by that action. In any case it is an unusually serious misconduct. (...) "

Munich Re also lists these alleged but unconfirmed events:

  • Kiev (2012) - stay in a hotel that has a bar, also in the table dance is offered. According to testimony, the participants would enter the bar briefly, but quickly abandoned it again, after her character was evident.Documents are not available.
  • Lüneburg (2010 or 2011) - have come at a seminar in a hotel, it is in the evening to table dance or striptease. The allegations have not been confirmed by surveys of the hotel staff.
  • The competitive journey of two former general representative of the HMI to Ibiza (2008) was identified as potentially critical. According to the investigation of the audit could be found no wrongdoing.
  • The revision has followed clues that on trips to Asia (1998-2008) and Cuba (2002) Travellers should have sexual services privately organized. Documents are not available.
  • Alleged visit to a nudist sauna club / brothel for a sales launch event in Berlin (2007). The allegation could not be confirmed through interviews with participants. Documents are not available.
  • The note, on a trip to Majorca was (2005), it came to an invitation to a brothel, had not be clarified. The accused leader has rejected the argument clear. However, a high bill is fixed on "Food and Drink" before (2,428 euros). With a certain probability, so the visit was a night club or a brothel be concealed. Evidence was not possible.
  • A notice of an employee on May 2011 It is said to have occurred on a cruise ship (2002) on sexual harassment of a crew member. The investigation revealed that a female board member who felt harassed because of sexual innuendos affecting the traveler. The traveler has apologized in person to the lady.
  • Recalling the alleged presence of prostitutes on a management seminar in Zurich (1976) went to the revision. Evidence did not find them. The then responsible board member dismissed the facts clearly.

Oh to be a German insurance man.

Retired Accountant 'Beaten To Death' By Russian Escort Girl

$

imageA retired accountant who became a recluse following the death of his wife was beaten to death at his home by a Russian escort girl after becoming "addicted" to her, a court has heard.

Natalia Woolley, 38, who described herself on escort websites as "alluring to all men and incredibly sexy", is accused of leaving 69-year-old Winston Fernandez slumped lifeless against his bed.

It is alleged she soon started trying to cover her tracks. She called her mobile phone provider to ask if her iPhone could be traced, then stopped using her phone, jurors were told.

Guildford Crown Court heard that Mr Fernandez, who lived alone in a four-bedroom house in Epsom, Surrey, was not found until almost a month after his death when a concerned neighbour contacted police.

William Saunders, prosecuting, said Woolley was registered with the Diamond Escorts and 24-Carat Escorts agencies, and used the names Lenka and Alice to ply her trade.

Opening the case, he said she featured in "various poses" on the agency websites and in one described herself as 26 but "mature".

"It says that this girl is alluring to all men, and incredibly sexy with a curvaceous body," he told the jury of six men and six women.

Mr Fernandez saw Woolley a number of times in the months leading up to his death, and wrote a review on her website page saying he was "addicted" to her.

On Boxing Day last year, he wrote about a visit on November 25. "What a girl she is," he wrote. "I have never been disappointed... It is a pleasure to be with you. I will spend a lifetime with you."

The court heard that Mr Fernandez, whose wife had died in 2000, was estranged from his two sons and was a "lonely, difficult" man who "frequently found comfort in alcohol" and had started to use the services of escort agency girls.

On the evening of January 16 this year, Woolley had gone to his address at his request, Mr Saunders said.

"Miss Woolley was the last person to see him alive. By the time she left in the early hours of January 17, he had suffered multiple injuries and was left dead, or left for dead. He was not found until February 13."

The barrister said Woolley had cut both his telephone lines before making off into the night.

Miss Woolley, of West Kensington, London, who wore orange-rimmed glasses, a cream overcoat and a pink hair-grip to tie back her blonde highlighted hair, listened to the proceedings through headphones via a Russian interpreter. She denies murder

She is alleged to have inflicted a "sustained and brutal assault" on her frail victim, causing terrible injuries all over his body.

Mr Saunders told the jury the defendant kicked, punched and stamped on Mr Fernandez, fracturing 17 ribs and breaking his larynx in two places.

He said: "He was found fully clothed, but in a state of partial decay, and the post-mortem of him revealed that he had been beaten to death. By beaten, I mean punched and kicked."

The Home Office pathologist had found a "large number of injuries, some severe, and some requiring severe force" across the pensioner's head, face, neck, torso, legs, back, arms and hands.

Mr Saunders said in interview the defendant said Mr Fernandez had locked her into his house, demanded she perform sex acts, and attacked her by pinning her down and grabbing her legs.

She said he had drunkenly fallen on the floor as they argued, the court heard.

"The reality," he said, "is that she had repeatedly punched him, kicked him and stamped on him using severe force. Her account was so far removed from the truth - that she had killed him.

"She must have left him dead, or very nearly so. Before she left she cut the telephone lines. She was to say in her interview that she did it to stop Mr Fernandez calling her. Really, the truth is that she was venting her rage, as she was clearly enraged that night."

The prosecutor said Woolley soon started trying to cover her tracks after she left the dead Mr Fernandez dead or dying. She called her mobile phone provider 3 to ask if it was possible her iPhone could be traced.

"She realised that if her phone could be traced to a location, then so could she," Mr Saunders said. Woolley then stopped using her phone.

The trial continues.

Detroit Police Chief Accused Of Affair With The Same Woman Who Brought Down The Last Police Chief

police chief ralph godbee

A myriad of sex scandals has gripped the Detroit Police Department.

Its latest chief Ralph Godbee was suspended for 30 days after an affair with police officer Angelica Robinson took a turn for the worse, 7 Action News reported Tuesday.

His predecessor, Chief Warren Evans, was also forced to resign after sleeping with a police officer Monique Patterson.

In a bizarre coincidence, Godbee is also accused of having an affair with Patterson.

But Godbee is in trouble for his alleged relationship with Internal Affairs Officer Robinson, who tweeted Tuesday about her relationship with the chief when she believed he was at a conference with another woman, according to 7 Action News.

Godbee is also accused of having a third affair with an unnamed woman outside the department.

Mayor Dave Bing said in a statement he suspended Godbee "after learning of the allegations" against him. The Mayor's Office refused to answer any questions beyond the official statement.

"Wow look like the Chief is not who we all thought he was so sad!" Godbee's estranged wife Yolanda tweeted after news of the affair broke, adding " don't let this man bring u down! Know that u r NEVER the only one in his life. Don't ruin your life he's no good."

Evans, Godbee's predecessor, was forced to resign in 2010 after it was revealed he had an affair with Patterson.

Godbee reportedly also had a relationship with Patterson but it was unclear if his relationship overlapped with Evans'.

The department doesn't forbid command officers from dating subordinates but it can cause "a major conflict of interest," according to the television station.

The police department didn't responded to Business Insider's request for comment. We're still waiting for a statement from the Mayor's Office.

There's A List Ranking College Majors By Which Students Have The Most Sex — And Wall Streeters Do Pretty Well

college-graduate-outdoors-wink

Studentbeans.com conducted a survey of college students, asking the number of sexual partners they'd had since the beginning of college (h/t Wall Street Oasis).

The standard thing to do with that information is to compile it by school and watch the college rivalries unfold, but they went even further — they compiled the averages by major.

Clusterstock, naturally, scanned the list for Wall Street related majors, and we didn't have to look too hard. Economics majors ranked #1 with an average of 4.88 partners.

Business Studies came in at number 7 (with a 4.31 average) and Accounting and Finance made the list at number 20 out of 42.

Rounding out the top 5 after Economics were Social Work, Marketing, Leisure and Hospitality, and Agriculture in that order.

Environmental Science came in dead last, right after Theology.

officer angelica robinson

The Detroit police chief embroiled in not one, not two, but three sex scandals has retired.

But not before his "former lover" took to the media to air the couple's dirty laundry.

Chief Ralph Godbee was suspended last week after one of his three alleged mistresses tweeted incriminating pictures and statements about her relationship with the chief.

Godbee allegedly had an affair with officer Angelica Robinson, an unnamed woman, and officer Monique Patterson.

In a bizarre coincidence, Godbee's predecessor Chief Warren Evans was forced to resign after also having an affair with Patterson.

MyFOXDetroit tracked down Robinson last week, who called herself the ex-chief's "former lover."

"He is a sex addict," Robinson said. "He loves to have sex with all different women. One woman does not satisfy him."

Robinson said she tweeted the startling picture because she believed Godbee was attending a conference with another woman.

"And I tweeted him and I was like 'Oh so now you trying to kill me? You're gonna kill me for myself so I can be quiet cuz you don't want me talking. Really?'" Robinson said.

And now Godbee has retired, effectively immediately, after just two years in the top spot, myFOXDetroit reported this morning.

You can see the controversial picture Robinson posted over at myFoxDetroit.

Ex-NFL Cheerleader Admits To 'Sexual Misconduct' With A High School Boy

Sarah Jones bengals cheerleader had sex with hs student

A former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader pleaded guilty Monday to having sex with her 17-year-old former student while she was a teacher at a northern Kentucky high school, a move that will allow her to avoid jail time.

In a tearful admission in Kenton County Circuit Court in Covington, Ky., 27-year-old Sarah Jones pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct and custodial interference in place of more serious charges as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

"I began a romantic relationship while he was a student and I was in a position of authority," Jones said, her voice cracking as her family members wiped their own tears.

Jones said the relationship began in February 2011 when the boy was 17, saying that the two had sex, that she sent him sexually explicit text messages and lied about the relationship to police.

The teen had been in Jones' freshman English class in 2008, and she was his peer tutor in 2010 and 2011 before he graduated at the age of 17 this year, according to Monday's plea agreement, signed by Jones.

In accepting the plea agreement, Judge Patricia Summe granted prosecutors' recommendation to sentence Jones to five years of diversion but no jail time, and she won't have to register as a sex offender. The diversion requires Jones to report to a probation officer and undergo drug tests.

Prosecutors said they were willing to make the deal because the teen, now 18, and his family were uncooperative with them and on Jones' side.

"We feel that it is a just and it is a fair result," prosecutor Sara Farmer said. "It's certainly difficult when a victim and his family don't cooperate by not providing information, but it makes our case a lot harder when they're actually proactive for a defendant, and in this case, the family was more than supportive of the Jones (family). They were proactive for them."

Jones had taught at Dixie Heights High School before resigning last November. She was indicted in March, and her trial had been set to start Wednesday.

Part of the reason defense attorney Eric Deters said Jones was willing to plead guilty was because Summe had denied his request to keep the text messages that she sent to the teen out of the trial.

"They're embarrassing," Deters told reporters after the hearing. "They were steamy."

He also said that now that the teen is 18 years old, he and Jones "are free to be together" and pointed out that they left the courtroom together.

Deters declined to discuss details of their current relationship, saying that the pair would discuss it on the "Today" show and "Dateline" on Friday.

He said that Jones will not try out to be a Bengals cheerleader in the future, and that for now, she's working as a legal assistant in his office.

Jones has expressed interest in becoming a lawyer and is studying to take the Law School Admission Test, he said.

Before any accusations involving the student surfaced, Jones drew public attention when she sued a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based gossip website over a posting dated Dec. 7, 2009, that included her photo and was headlined "The Dirty Bengals Cheerleader." The posting claimed that Jones' ex-boyfriend cheated on her with more than 50 women, contracted chlamydia and gonorrhea, and likely gave it to her.

Another post on the site, Thedirty.com, accused Jones of having sex in the classroom and said, "Why are all high school teachers freaks in the sack?"

Jones resigned as a teacher at Dixie Heights and from the Bengals cheer squad in late 2011 after four years with both jobs. Deters said at the time that she had done nothing wrong and stepped down because a rumor that she had become involved with a student became too much.

The lawsuit, which accuses the website and its creator of defamation and invasion of privacy and seeks $11 million in damages, was on hold until the criminal case was resolved.

Deters now is asking for a January trial date in the matter.

Jones' mother, former school principal Cheryl Armstrong Jones, also pleaded guilty Monday, to a misdemeanor charge of attempted tampering with evidence. She admitted to the judge that she sent the teen a text message telling him to get rid of his phone and also avoided jail time.

Girl In Roman Polanski Case Is About To Go Public With A Massive Tell-All

roman polanski

After being labeled the "sex victim girl" and ostracized by friends' parents, the girl at the heart of director Roman Polanski's 1977 sex scandal is speaking out.

Polanski was arrested decades ago after he was accused of feeding then-13-year-old Samantha Geimer part of a Quaalude and champagne before raping her.

But in a statement about her tell-all book, expected to be published next year, the now-47-year-old says she isn't angry, she just wants her story told, The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog reported Tuesday.

From Geimer's statement:

“I am more than ‘Sex Victim Girl,’ a tag the media pinned on me. My friends in junior high, scolded by their parents to stay away from that girl, also labeled me. I offer my story now without rage, but with purpose — to share a tale that in its detail will reclaim my identity. I have been dogged by tired thinking and easy tags nearly my entire life. I am not a stick figure. I know what it is like to be a woman and a victim in the realest possible way.”

The saga has sparked headlines for decades after Polanski pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse and then fled to France hours before he was scheduled to be sentenced.

He was held under house arrest in Switzerland for years after the country refused to deport him to the U.S.

Women Really Do Get Huge Deals By Flirting [STUDY]

$

woman dealership

We took a closer look at the much talked about flirting article by UC Berkley professor Laura Kray, and the findings are impressive.

The simplest demonstration of the power of flirting was in a study where participants imagined they were selling a car worth $1,200 to a potential buyer named Sue.

In one scenario Sue was flirtatious:

As you meet and shake hands, Sue smiles at you warmly and says, “What a pleasure to meet you.” You chat about the weather as Sue takes off her coat and sits down. Looking you up and down, Sue leans forward, briefly touches your arm and says, “You’re even more charming in person than over email.” Then, somewhat playfully, she winks at you and says, “What’s your best price?”

In the other scenario Sue was neutral:

As you meet and shake hands, Sue smiles and says, “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” You chat about the weather as Sue takes off her coat and sits down. Looking you directly in the eye, Sue says, “I’m looking forward to talking over the financials with you and hopefully working out a deal today. Let’s get down to business.” Then, somewhat seriously, she says, “What’s your best price?”

Male participants offered to sell the car for $1,077 in the flirtacious scenarios, versus $1,279 in the neutral scenario. That's a big discount for just a little flirting.

Sue's flirtations did not have a significant effect on female participants.

Kray identified further mostly positive effects of flirting, including:

female negotiators being perceived as more effective (Study 1), having greater understanding of their negotiating partner’s interests (Experiment 4), and enhanced the positive mood of their interaction partner (Experiment 3). On the other hand, feminine charm had more complicated effects on female negotiators’ economic outcomes, enhancing their individual outcomes in Experiment 2 but harming them in Experiment 3. Because feminine charm combines friendliness with flirtation, its effect appears to reside in how these two dimensions are balanced. When perceived as flirtatiousness, female negotiators received better offers (Experiment 2); when perceived as friendliness, female negotiators negotiated worse deals (Experiment 3). This pattern is consistent with the finding that warmth signals a lack of competitiveness (Fiske et al., 2002), making friendliness an economic liability in a competitive, zero-sum negotiation. This may also explain the outcome in the mixedmotive negotiation (Experiment 4), that is, feminine charm signaled the female negotiator’s cooperative intent (i.e., concern for other), which enabled expansion of the pie but hindered her ability to competitively claim the added value.

CHART: Martinis, Conquests, And Kills By Bond

$

James Bond films are almost always the same: Bond is sent to an exotic location, meets and seduces a woman, gets caught by the villain, escapes, kills the villain and gets the girl. Known for martinis, Bond girls, apocalyptic antagonists and heavy innuendo, Bond has schmoozed, boozed and bruised his way through women and villains alike.

Or not alike. Data compiled by The Economist show that of the six Bonds, Pierce Brosnan was the most bloodthirsty, bumping off an average of 19 baddies per film.

The short-lived George Lazenby, it turns out, was the Bond for the babes, whereas Daniel Craig, the latest, is notably less successful. Maybe that's because he drinks the most martinis. Still, all that risks being short-lived. In the new Bond film, "Skyfall", Heineken has paid to ensure the hero only drinks beer. Neither shaken nor stirred, presumably.

Hey Dude, You're Not As Charming As You Think [STUDY]

$

cool

There was a lot of press last week about an article on female charm by UC Berkeley professor Laura Kray.

Kray found in a series of studies that flirting makes women more effective in competitive and cooperative negotiations.

But buried in her paper is a depressing conclusion about male charm.

It was in a study of 100 MBA students. Participants were asked to rate how likely they were to use personal charm in negotiating situations. They were also asked to rate the effectiveness of their negotiating partner. Here are the results:

[S]elfreported reliance on social charm predicted effectiveness ratings by one’s negotiating counterpart, r(100) = .27, p < .01. However, this relationship was only significant for female negotiators, r(36) = .53, p < .01; for male negotiators, the relationship was not statistically significant, r(64) = .12, p = .34. ... [F]emales appear to have benefited from the use of social charm whereas males neither benefited nor were harmed by the use of social charm.

This isn't to say that men can't be effective negotiators. Male and female participants were seen as being near equally effective in the study.

What it does suggest is that either (1) male charm is not effective in business negotiations or (2) men have a poor understanding of whether or not they are charming.

No one in his low-key Brooklyn neighborhood would have guessed this father of four was allegedly a pimp responsible for running four brothels in Manhattan.

Fort Greene resident William Thomas is accused of not only operating brothels in the Financial District and Midtown East, but also running raunchy sex websites featuring pictures of naked, busty Asian women, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Thomas, 42, worked in IT for Compuware in New Jersey before divorcing his first wife and moving to New York to date a string of Asian women, the New York Post reported, citing unnamed sources.

He has been operating the prostitution ring since at least September 2011, according to the Post, which cited a criminal complaint. The illicit business catered to "white collar Johns," DNA Info reported.

Neighbors and family alike were shocked at Thomas' arrest but his son wasted no time throwing his dad under the bus.

"Awesome dad! way to make the thomas family proud.," Thomas' 11th-grade son Noah Thomas tweeted. “My dad is the upcoming story on nbc news if anyone wants to watch . . .Pretty surreal to hear your dad’s name on the news in connection to a massive prostitution ring bust. had to happen eventually i guess.”

PLAYBOY: This Is What Your Sex Life Would Look Like Under Mitt Romney

$

Marilyn Monroe Playboy Dec 1953

If Mitt Romney wins the presidency, his policies would take American sex back at least 60 years, according to a new column from prominent historian Nancy L. Cohen, featured in the latest issue of Playboy

Romney, a Mormon, is against freely available birth control and abortion, Cohen writes.

"When Willard Mitt Romney entered high school, in 1961, birth control was illegal in some states, abortion was illegal except in rare cases, sodomy — often including oral sex — was a crime in every state and young single women had to lie to get the pill," Cohen writes. "Is America going back to those days? That depends on what happens in November."

Here's how she says Romney as president would change American sex:

  • "Contraception will be less accessible, more expensive and, for some women, completely out of reach," Cohen writes. Romney was opposed to President Obama's policy requiring all insurers to provide birth control for no additional charge. He also promised to get rid of Title X, a federal program that provides 5 million women with contraception.
  • Abortion would be outlawed. "The 2012 Republican Party platform calls for a U.S. constitutional amendment to ban abortion even in cases of incest, rape and threat to the life of the mother," Cohen writes. She speculates that Romney would appoint conservative Supreme Court justices to overturn abortion.
  • Birth control could eventually be banned. Romney has said he disagrees with the ruling of Griswold Vs. Connecticut, a 1972 case that basically stated sexual freedom is a constitutional right. If the ruling were overturned, "nothing would stand in the way" of legally banning birth control, according to Cohen. She stresses that this would be more likely to affect states in the Bible Belt.
  • Sexual education in schools could go away. "Travel through the heartland and over the Rockies into Salt Lake City, where in the shadow of the Mormon Tabernacle a Utah lawmaker defended censorship because saying the word condom to students was like encouraging them to “mainline” heroin," Cohen writes.
  • Porn would be less available. In a speech, Romney told voters he would  "make sure that every new computer sold in this country after I’m president has installed on it a filter to block all pornography." He also plans to up anti-obscenity laws.
While many of Romney's supporters see him as the moderate governor of Massachusetts, this perception is dangerous given his conservative record on sexual issues, according to Cohen.

"Welcome to the future of your sex life," she writes. "Welcome back to 1950."

Brazilian Student Sells Her Virginity For $780,000 Online

Catarina Migliorini

A Brazilian student has sold her virginity in an online auction for $780,000 as part of a documentary organised by an Australian filmmaker, according to reports.

Catarina Migliorini, 20, was the subject of 15 bids, with a Japanese man named only as Natsu winning on Wednesday night, Australian media reported.

They said Miss Migliorini would be "delivered" to her buyer on board a plane to Australia and that she would be interviewed before and after losing her virginity at a secret location.

Filmmaker Jason Sisely, who reportedly began his project in 2009 and caused outrage when he put posters up in Sydney and Melbourne saying "Virgins Wanted", said Miss Migliorini was ecstatic and had not expected such a high level of interest.

"The auction closed last night and Catarina is extremely excited. She was speaking to her family in Brazil online and they were extremely happy for her," he told Australian online news site Ninemsn.

"But I guess they didn't expect her to do something like this."

He said the act would be consummated, but not filmed, in the next few weeks.

"We will fly over the winner to Australia and obviously, for the sake of the film and privacy, we can't disclose where and when the act will take place," he said. "I have to leave some details for the documentary."

Miss Migliorini defended the move.

"I saw this as a business. I have the opportunity to travel, to be part of a movie and get a bonus with it," she told Folha newspaper.

"If you only do it once in your life then you are not a prostitute, just like if you take one amazing photograph it does not automatically make you a photographer."

Sisely told Ninemsn that under the terms of the auction a condom was compulsory and Natsu must be tested beforehand for any sexually transmitted diseases.

"I'm looking forward to my audience's response to the film," he said.

Bicycle Seat

Bicycling is a terrific way to get around. It also has many documented health and environmental benefits.

Why doesn't everyone bike everywhere? Well, some people worry that biking can damage their sexual functions, which is backed up by research. Studies have shown that bicycling can damage your sex life: Causing numbness in the penis, increased risk of erectile dysfunction, and decreased sensation in woman.

But here's the good news: There are ways to avoid the negative health effects of spending hours straddling a bike seat.

When sitting on a bicycle, a lot of pressure is being placed on the perineum, the space between your anus and your genitals. According to the Harvard Medical School, pressure on the perineum can reduce blood flow to the genitals by as much as 66 percent, that’s because the perineum contains important nerves and arteries that supply our sexual organs.

Luckily these negative affects are only seen on people who bike for long periods of time, but if that's you, or if you are still worried about it, here are simple solutions to avoid the problem:

  • Pick a wide seat with plenty of padding.
  • Do not tilt your seat upwards, doing so can increase pressure on your perineum.
  • Make sure your seat is at the correct height. Your legs should not completely extend while on the pedals.
  • Wear padded biking pants for extra protection if you want it.
  • Move around and take breaks if you are going for a long ride.

The Craziest Things We Learned In That Book About Sex At Yale

yale

We finally read a review copy of Sex And God At Yale, the controversial book by conservative commentator Nathan Harden that came out in August.

As many critics have said, the book gets pretty sanctimonious. But if you're just reading for the salacious anecdotes, well, there are a lot of those.

Here are some things we learned:

  • Yale spends $30,000 every two years on a thing called "Sex Week," which is supposed to educate students on safe sex and good sex.

  • Free porn is given out at Yale during Sex Week. Harden writes, "Most Yale parents don't realize that $50,000 a year includes free porn as a bonus. .. Moreover, it is ironic that porn is handed out at Yale's safe-sex seminars, since nearly all American porn is filmed 'bareback.'  Yale's peer health educators spent an hour telling us how important it is to practice safe sex 'every time' and then they offered us glamorized portrayals of condom-free sex on our way out the door. As I leave, I can still hear the girl shouting. 'Porn! Free porn! For anyone who wants it!'"

  • Ambitious women at Yale use the hookup culture to help delay love and focus on their careers. But it's not actually working, according to Harden:

The conflict many young women feel between their hearts and their careers is at the heart of sexual dysfunction on college campuses today. This leads us to a surprising conclusion: While the hookup, with its commitment-free sex and zero emotional attachment, seems to be skewed toward the desires of men, the hookup culture, is, arguably, largely controlled by women. The hookup culture endures, largely, because ambitious young women face a tremendous amount of social pressure to delay love. If real love is not an option, a hookup might seem better than nothing at all.

Casual sex has been around forever. But the sexual culture at our colleges has changed in dramatic ways over the last few decades. Men used to have to work much harder to get sex. There used to be lots of dating and wooing and pleading going on. Now, it's just so easy.

Sex can be casual, but it's never really trivial. It isn't possible to completely remove the emotional realities of sex from the equation. Scientists now tell us that the act of having sex actually alters our neurological makeup through the release of hormones that strengthen the emotional attachment by way of a chemical reaction in the brain. ... Sex with no strings attached often produces confusion, especially for girls, who tend to be more tuned into the emotional side of life.

  • Sex week features nude lectures. Writes Harden, "I was about to witness the very first naked lecture in the history of Yale University ...Then the teacher decides she needs to 'get more comfortable,' so she slips off her tights, and before you know it she is standing bare-chest in front of the entire class. ... The teacher, in this case, was a redheaded porn star form San Francisco who goes by the name Madison Young. ... Miss Young's second lecture was moved to a frat house one block away. A crowd of students gathered in the yard, along with a few curious bystanders, to watch. Young's partner tied her up and suspended her over the front porch, and she hung there, dangling in her underwear. Across the street an alarmed passerby shouted 'Why are you doing that?!' The pendulous Ms. Young shouted back, 'Because I liiiiiiike it!'"

  • During the "Babeland's Lip Tricks" seminar, one of 17 Sex Week seminars, an instructor named Darlinda gave a lecture on the "Pleasure Bill Of Rights" to a standing-room-only audience. Here's the "Bill" with quotes from Darlinda:

  1. You're sexy already. Every part of your body is sexy. And you can use your whole body to have sex: your mouth, your feet, your toes, your ears, your nose, everything.

  2. Loving yourself; it's a big, big, big important thing. "I really encourage masturbation, it's so important," Darlinda tells the class.

  3. Enjoy the journey. It's not all about having that orgasm.

  4. Own your own orgasm. ("Masturbate, masturbate, masturbate.")

  5. Ask for what you want.

  6. Take charge of safe sex. ("It's 2010. Guess What? We should all be having safe sex. You, know, there are diseases out there ... If you need to use dental dams you can use Saran Wrap. You can get Saran Wrap anywhere. Okay?")

  7. Use lubrication.

  8. Laugh.

  9. Don't be afraid to make a mess.

  10. Keep growing. ("Every day I learn new things. I learn them from you. And you can learn them from me. And we can learn them together.")

Hurricane Sandy Could Cause A Baby Boom In 9 Months

babies crawling

Last week, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, readers @amyh914, @dauentina and ‏@TheRealYadiM all asked if we should expect a spike in birth rates along the East Coat nine months from now — a mini-baby boom caused by Sandy.

The idea that disasters and birth rates are correlated goes back at least to at least 1965, when a blackout plunged New York City into darkness for several hours one November night.

The following August, the New York Times noted a “sharp increase in births” in several of the city’s large hospitals, proclaiming in a headline “BIRTHS UP 9 MONTHS AFTER THE BLACKOUT.”

It seems plausible enough. TVs and telephones weren’t working, and the subway wasn’t running — what else were people going to do with their time but get it on? After many disasters since then, we’ve heard the same folk wisdom. “It is evidently pleasing to many people,” said Richard Udry, a sociologist at the University of North Carolina who studied post-blackout birth rates, “to fantasize that when people are trapped by some immobilizing event which deprives them of their usual activities, most will turn to copulation.”

The Evidence For … and Against

The actual evidence for hurricane/snow/tornado/whatever babies is mixed. A few studies have found that natural and man-made disasters can influence the birth rate and others haven’t. When disasters do come into play, the birth rate doesn’t always increase; the catalyst for conception is sometimes boredom and sometimes something more complicated.

Udry’s study found that the blackout babies of 1966 were nothing special. In 1970, he looked at NYC births over a several-year period and couldn’t find a statistically significant spike in births associated with the blackout. The number of babies born within the time frame where the day of the blackout could have been the date of conception was “not at all remarkable for 1966 when compared to the previous five years.”

In 2002, Catherine Cohan and Steve Cole, human development and family studies researchers at Penn State University, examined 22 years’ worth of marriage, birth and divorce rates from South Carolina. They found that in 1990—the year after Hurricane Hugo struck and caused about $5.9 billion in property damage in the state, killed 35 people and left 50,000 homeless — marriage, birth and divorce rates all shot up in the counties that were declared disaster areas.

With all three moving in the same direction, Cohan and Cole concluded that the stress and life-threatening danger from the storm provoked “significant and relatively quick action in [people’s] personal lives that altered their life course.”

In 2005, three psychologists from the University of Oklahoma wondered if the fear and stress caused by a man-made disaster might have a similar effect. They looked at birth data from Oklahoma City and its surrounding counties for the years 1990 to 1999—about five years of data before the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing would have any effect on births, and about four years of data afterward—and found a strong increase in birth rates in and around the city nine months after the bombing.

They thought that the increase happened either because people felt a threat to their own sense of mortality or considered the fragility of life after the bombing, and responded by strengthening their family.

Blame It On The Weather

For a 2010 study, economists from the U.S., Germany and China analyzed birth data and hurricane and tropical storm advisories in 47 counties along the United States’ Gulf and Atlantic Coasts from 1995 to 2001. They found that “low-severity” advisories correlated positively with birth rates nine months later and that “high-severity” advisories correlated negatively. Areas that experienced tropical storm or hurricane watches had a post-storm baby boom, but areas that had storm or hurricane warnings saw a decrease in births.

According to NOAA, watches mean the possibility of a storm and usually come approximately 48 hours in advance of it. During a watch, people should prepare their homes and then remain in them. A storm warning means a storm should be expected, and usually come about 36 hours in advance. In the event of a warning, people should finish storm preparations and be ready to evacuate.

The differing birth rates following the two events, the researchers reason, is tied to the perceived danger of the event and the things people do during them. During a storm warning, people might stock up on food and hunker down in the house. After a while, they might get bored watching TV, or maybe the power goes out, and they head to the bedroom—in line with the popular prediction. In a more severe warning, though, people might more concerned with gathering supplies, securing their homes and getting ready to leave the area. Even if they’re riding the storm out at home, the researchers think, they may be too worried or occupied to engage in romance.

So, will we see a lot of babies named Sandy next summer? Maybe, but certainly not in all areas and not always because of the exact same reasons. The ties between catastrophe and conception are more complex than we might think.

The Truth Is... Hanging Out Alone A Lot With Someone You Find Attractive Is Asking For Trouble

david petraeus paula broadwell plane

In the wake of the shocking resignation of one of America's greatest generals over an extramarital affair, the recriminations have begun.

Predictably, many people, including a Petraeus colleague, are already "blaming the woman." A nobody graduate student charms her way into the confidence of a powerful man — and then uses her seductive powers to bring him down.

Petraeus himself, in contrast, has admirably taken full responsibility for his downfall, declaring his behavior "unacceptable" and proactively resigning over it.

Meanwhile, both General Petraeus and Paula Broadwell have spouses and families who have already presumably been seriously wounded by the highly public affair. And the country has lost an extraordinary leader.

So, who's really to blame?

What is the central mistake here that everyone should learn from and try not to make?

The obvious answer is that you shouldn't cheat on your spouse, especially when you're in a position of such power and responsibility. Leaving aside the moral and personal issues involved, this behavior exposes you to enormous career and reputational risk and is therefore reckless and irresponsible.

But that answer is so obvious that it's not really helpful or insightful. Except for those who make extracurricular activity a way of life — the age-old lifestyle of "the mistress and the wife"— most people know that they shouldn't cheat. And yet, time and again, relationships, careers, families, and reputations are wrecked because good people make the same obvious mistake.

(Yes, sometimes, these "mistakes" turn out to be for the best. One or both participants use the affair as the trigger to end an unhappy relationship and then go on to spend their lives together. But too often, the affairs really do prove to be mistakes — mistakes that wreak havoc all around.)

So, what's the real lesson?  Is there a small mistake that often leads to the bigger mistake — a small mistake that is more easily avoided than the bigger one?

I think the answer is "yes."

Many years ago, long before I got married, I asked a happily married friend what her secret was. Specifically, I asked her how, in her second marriage, she had avoided succumbing to a temptation that had helped end her (very early) first marriage and the marriages of many, many other good, responsible people.

Her answer, learned from experience, was simple and quick:

"Never put yourself in a position where you're asking for trouble."

I had never heard that answer before. So I asked for details.

"You don't die when you get married," she explained. "If you spend enough time hanging out alone with someone you're attracted to, nature's eventually going to take over."

Even at the time that answer struck me as wise. And nearly thirty years later, it still seems wise.

We're animals, after all. And one reason our species has been so spectacularly successful over the millennia is that our instincts are powerful enough to trump just about everything — one instinct in particular.

By all accounts, General David Petraeus had more willpower and discipline and sense of professional duty than just about any man alive. If a man like Petraeus can fall prey to the same mistake that has destroyed so many other marriages, careers, and reputations, perhaps it's time we began to look at such mistakes differently, at least when it comes to trying to avoid them.

Specifically, perhaps it's time we acknowledged that, when we allow ourselves to be placed in certain intimate situations, these mistakes are very easy and natural to make. No matter who we are.
